CAROLINA ROLLERGIRLS ROLLER DERBY | SEASON 1: BOUT 1 WRAPUP
The Carolina Rollergirls had their first official bout this past Sunday (4/10/05) at the Skate Ranch in Raleigh where members of the Buried.com staff were in attendance. We have been looking forward to Bout 1 in the inaugural season for quite some time... and let me tell you... it did not disappoint.
Bout 1 featured the Debutante Brawlers against the Trauma Queens... and the buzz about the event had the Skate Ranch crammed full of derby goers. I was thrilled at the size of the crowd. I mean, I was expecting a pretty good sized turnout... but not the size of what was there. The parking lot was jam full... and people were parking on the streets and in the parking lots of neighboring business. The streets were littered with derby fans, flocking to the bout... was great to see! If you got there early... you could get a seat in one of the many chairs that encircled the rink. In front of the chairs, there were rows upon rows of fans sitting on the floor... right next to the action. Behind the chairs, it was nearly standing room only. There were many great views to be had... but I found myself a wall to hug right near the action... close enough to where I thought a stray rollergirl or two was going to take me out a few times. Along with the local fans attending, there were also some representatives of the Atlanta Rollergirls in attendance. The place was packed with young adults, moms, dads, kids... and then the rest of us freaks!
I can't say enough about the heart and soul these ladies showed during the bout. While both teams fought valiantly the entire time... the Trauma Queens ended up edging out the Debutante Brawlers in the end. From the first whistle to the last... the action was fast and furious. Bad-ass does little to describe the ladies of the Carolina Rollergirls. They were fast... they were rough... they were tough... and they were hot. I was impressed with the skating ability that I saw... and with the intestinal fortitude with which they pounded their way around the rink. With their derby personas in tow... they rocked the ranch!
We will have more on the Carolina Rollergirls in the near future. If you are in the Raleigh area... you should check out the upcoming bouts. Many other cities around the country have their own teams... so you should check to see if there is one near you!
