CAROLINA ROLLERGIRLS ROLLER DERBY | SEASON 3: BOUT 4 WRAPUP
Raleigh, North Carolina - July 23, 2006... The Carolina Roller Derby 2006 Semi-Finals. The one and one Debutante Brawlers take on the winless Trauma Queens. It is hot as hell in Brawleigh as the war on wheels rages on to see who will get a birth to the 2006 Season Championship. But as Yogi Berra said, "It ain't the heat; it's the humility"... and one Carolina team is about to be served up a big ole slice of humble pie on this bout Sunday. The track is lit, the wheeled boots are strapped on and the Ladies of Brawleigh are ready to rock & roll in front of a sold out crowd at the Skate Ranch in Raleigh.
Due to a scheduling conflict, we were not able to attend the semi-final bout in person... so we were not able to shoot any photos of the furious action. Given that we were not there, the bout writeup is compiled from info from the great CRG statisticians and other fans who were in attendance. We are hoping to have some third-party photos online soon.
The Trauma Queens kicked off the first period with Betty Rumble scoring 3 points as Teflon Donna and the Debutante Brawlers were held scoreless. Kitty Crowbar and the Debs were held scoreless again in the next jam as the Queens extended their lead behind Faye Tallity's 3 points. But Teflon Donna and the Debs stormed back in the next jam with 8 points while DVS of the Queens scored 5. The Trauma Queens now lead by a score of 11 to 8. Eva Lye and the Debs returned the favor of an early blanking and took the lead by scoring 4 points in the next jam while holding Penelope Bruz and the Queens scoreless. Shirley Temper and the Debs maintained their lead by getting 4 points while Betty Rumble and the Queens put up 3 points. The Debs extended their lead behind Teflon Donna's 2 points in the next jam while holding Faye Tallity and the Queens to zero. The Debs maintained their slim lead for quite a few jams, trading points back and forth with the Queens... until Roxy Rockett and the Queens dropped 4 points on the board while holding Eva Lye and the Debs to zero. The Trauma Queens now lead by a score of 34 to 32. That lead was very short lived... as Teflon Donna and the Debs bounced back with a whopping 13 points while holding the Queens to none. After a slight scoring adjustment, the Debutante Brawlers sport a 44-37 lead at the end of the first period.
The second period got started off much the same way the first period ended... with a bang. Teflon Donna and the Debs laid down an impressive 14 points while DVS and the Queens put up 8 points of their own. Eva Lye and the Debs extended their lead in the next jam with 4 more points while blanking Faye Tallity and the Queens. In the next jam, lead jammer Roxy Rockett of the Queens scored 3 points while holding Teflon Donna and the Debs to one. Eva Lye and the Debs extended their lead once again with 9 more points while DVS and the Queens had zero. The Debutante Brawlers now hold a substantial lead with a score of 72 to 48. Roxy Rockett and the Queens came back strong in the next jam with an unreal 14 points while Shirley Temper and the Debs chimed in with 4 points. The Queens scoring flurry didn't get the Debs down, as Teflon Donna dropped 8 points on Penelope Bruz and the Queens in the next jam. The teams traded scoring in the subsequent jams leading up to the end of the second period. The score now stands at 109 to 93... with the Debs holding a commanding lead.
So as the third period begins, it looks as though the Queens are pretty much down and out in this, the semi-final bout. (feel free to use that quote on Hollywood Squares Mr. Nipsey Russell) Well... you can never count the Queens out. In the first jam of the third period, Roxy Rockett and the Queens nearly tied things up with 13 huge points while blanking Teflon Donna and the Debs. The next jam saw Penelope Bruz and the Queens racking up 11 more points while back-to-back jamming Teflon Donna and the Debs scored 9. The Debutante Brawlers lead is now down to one point. The teams once again trade points in the next few jams, until Betty Rumble and the Queens rocked 12 points while holding Eva Lye and the Debs to none. The Trauma Queens have taken a one point lead, their first lead in quite some time. After a scoreless jam for each team, Teflon Donna and the Debs stormed back into the lead by scoring 13 points and holding Betty Rumble and the Queens to 4 points. This jam turned out to be the dagger in the hearts of the Queens, who ran out of time after not being able to get more than a few points in the next jams. The Debutante Brawlers take the win over the Trauma Queens by a final score of 151 to 144 and will make their way to the Season Championship bout in August.
